I am primarily interested in working with small-budget independent films, so my rates as a freelancer reflect my target collaborators. As such, my rates are negotiable pending candid discussion about the project.

I charge by minute of completed music, and the deliverable I provide is a complete final mix. This is assuming I start scoring from a picture-locked cut of the film. I understand that this isn’t always realistic depending on a variety of filmmaking factors, so further discussion to identify how best I can score the project is always an option.

for the first minute, I charge $70
for every minute after, I charge $42
the minute can be divided into quarters of fifteen seconds. round to the nearest quarter.
if i write 75 minutes of music for a film, that would cost $3178.
one minute of music requires on average 1.5 hour of work.
so the 75 minute movie would require 112.5 hours of work.
that’s 2.8 40hr work weeks at an hourly rate of $28.25.

After I have provided the initial deliverable, I charge $20 an hour for any edits or changes that are required. Please note that I am a very collaborative composer and I like to share bits and pieces as I move through my process. This is to say that the final deliverable (prior to any necessary changes) should fit the filmmaker’s vision successfully because of back-and-forth throughout the process. For this reason, I charge the hourly rate for edits because, in my experience, necessary changes are usually because of changes in the film edit, pacing, and sound design, or narrative decisions.
